IGNATIUS Mketekete came from behind once again to win the Pre-Open Classic at Royal Harare for his second consecutive victory on the Zambezi Tour yesterday.
Mketekete, who was basking in the glory of winning the Tour Players’ Championship, showed character on the back nine to recover from the one shot that has separated him with Tongo Charamba.
The battle appeared set for another play-off until the 17th hole when Charamba had a bad second shot that went over the green.
Mketekete said he was happy to win his second tournament on the trot, in as many weeks, and hopes he will carry the good form into the Zimbabwe Open slatted for April 10-15.
“I was so happy coming into today’s (yesterday) round I intended to hit a solid 68 but my hope was dented on number seven when I had a triple bogey,” said Mketekete.
“After the seventh hole my aim was to make two quick birdies which, however, did not come but I held on until the 16th when I started to look at how others were playing and I realised that I was leading.”
The second big golf event of the season attracted 57 players.
The only incident of the day saw Mark Cayeux pulling out of the second round on the 13th hole after he injured his leg.
Cayeuax, who suffered a horrific injury in a car accident, is making efforts to return to the field.
He had a good first round which he finished on level par.
Micky Hough, who at one point was on seven under, will always rue his putting for letting him down.
The seasoned Sunshine Tour campaigner missed some good putts.
Hough finish tied with Charamba, Zambian Madalitso Muthiya, Ryan Cairns, Tranos Muradzikwa on three under-par.
Dale Howie finished fifth on two under-par.
