Mthabisi Tshuma,

Models from Plumtree villages in Matabeleland South province emerged as the biggest winners at the Mapressa Glamour and Fashion show, held on Saturday at Bez Valley Caravan Park in Johannesburg.

In its third edition, the event—also known as Mapressa Julayi, the brainchild of South Africa-based DJ Mapressa, introduced the Mr Mapressa slot. The Mr Mapressa Glamour and Fashion show was awarded to Xolani Sibanda from Mkhologwe village (Mambale) in Plumtree, while Yvonne Nyoni from Mangarame in Plumtree, a former Miss Bukalanga, was crowned Miss Mapressa Glamour and Fashion Show 2024.

Nyoni received a sponsorship package that included facilitation to attain a driver’s license, two items from Just-Easy Furniture Shop, a Ngamo Safaris vacation package, and a night’s stay at Lavida Guest House.

Sibanda received a trip to Durban and an R7 800 voucher to study a course in beauty therapy at House of Beautie, a beauty therapy academy.

The event was well attended by music and fashion lovers, with models taking to the ramp regardless of their sizes. Performances were given by Mzoe 7, Jaycee Rappadict, Teekay Mxoexic, among others.

Notable attendees included Zimbabwean-born actor Chrispen Nyathi, known for his role on Diep City, Zinjaziyamluma, Lavida, and Joyful Ncube.

DJ Mapressa expressed satisfaction with the fashion statements made by the contestants and acknowledged areas for improvement.

“The event was amazing, and we were pleased with the fashion display by the women; their dresses were astounding—something their male counterparts need to follow suit. Some areas need to be addressed, and we are taking everything as a learning curve,” said DJ Mapressa. – @mthabisi_mthire
