Plumtree soccer league revived

THE Plumtree District Soccer League which collapsed early this year is being revived with the league’s committee now in the process of registering teams.

League chairperson Chakudza Mutarika said a new committee had been formed and they were working on enrolling new teams for the league.

He said the teams were being prepared for the league matches that would commence in February next year.

“This time around the league will comprise only teams from Plumtree town to ensure that matches flow smoothly. We realised that we were overburdening the teams by expecting them to travel long distances for matches.

“The clubs in the rural areas will also have their own league. This way teams will not miss their matches as a result of transport challenges,” said Mutarika.

He said the committee had lowered the registration fee for each team from $75 to $20. He said the new figure was inclusive of the registration fee for players and technical departments.

He said this was a strategy to have many clubs coming on board.

He said the league would continue operating at local level until teams were fully established.

“The $75 charge we had pegged was for teams to get affiliated under Zifa. However, teams started quitting the league one after the other until they were all gone,” he said.

Mutarika said the first event they had lined up was a tournament to be held at the end of this month.

He said they hope to market teams through the tournament in order to bring on board sponsors for the league and teams.

Mutarika said the eight member committee had issued about 20 clubs with letters inviting them to register under the league.
