PLUMTREE community will use the annual Jonah Football Tournament to scout for the best players to form a strong team that will compete in a Zifa registered league.
The competition which will feature eight teams, Kombani FC, Nyabane A, Nyabane B, Hlangulani, Plumtree Chiefs, Bangani, Manda and Marula, will be held on Christmas Day at Nyabane.
The tournament is bankrolled by South African based businessman Jonathan Ndlovu.
“Plumtree is the only border town in the country without a team playing in the Zifa lower leagues and the only way to revive football in the area is through tournaments such as the Jonah Football Tournament. The only football activity we have is in the form of social soccer tournaments that are in most instances poorly organised and do not offer a platform for young players to showcase their talent.
“We’ve invited legends and coaches to come and help us identify talented players so that we form a team which will compete in a Zifa registered league,” said Charlton Gumede, the organisers’ spokesperson.
The sponsor of the tournament has set aside R20 000 for prizes for the winning team, runners-up and individual awards.
Coaches and former players expected to attend the tournament include Johannes Ngodzo, Joel Luphahla, Agent Sawu, Gift Lunga Junior and Hebert Dick. — ZililoR
