PROSPECT Lithium Zimbabwe recently hosted a soccer tournament and cultural activities that brought together the people of Goromonzi as part of Africa Day celebrations.

The event sought to promote unity, diversity and Zimbabwe’s rich heritage.

The inaugural soccer tournament began on May 18 with knock-out matches involving eight teams drawn from the Goromonzi community.

Four teams made it to the semi-finals and the finals were played on May 25, as part of Africa Day celebrations.

The matches were played at the PLZ soccer ground, a new soccer pitch which the company recently constructed.

The winning team and runner-up received cash prizes and soccer kits. In addition to the soccer tournament, PLZ also had community celebrations which comprised of both Zimbabwe traditional as well as Chinese music and dance performances, cultural exhibitions which showcased Zimbabwean and Chinese art and heritage, food and refreshments highlighting both cultures’ diverse cuisine.

In a statement, PLZ public relations manager Mrs Patience Chizodza said the day was important as it signified the rich culture and values of the African people.

“Africa Day is a celebration of our continent’s rich history, diverse cultures, and remarkable achievements, she said.

“At PLZ, we are committed to promoting unity, development, and community engagement. This soccer tournament and community celebrations are a testament of our dedication to Zimbabwe and specifically, the Goromonzi community.

“This community engagement is a follow-up to the launch of our Goromonzi Community Development Programme in December, a testament to PLZ’s commitment to sustainable development. With an investment of US$1,2 million, the program’s various projects are successfully underway. As we build trust and receive our social license from the local community, it is clear that PLZ prioritises the well-being and prosperity of the community, ensuring a positive impact that extends beyond our operations.”

PLZ senior management, traditional leaders, and Government officials graced the commemorations.
