POLICE have appealed to people missing any relatives to contact them following the discovery of human remains at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) last week.
The remains were discovered by a member of the Bulawayo Fire Brigade which had been called to attend to a veld fire that broke out at the university.
They are suspected to be those of a man as a pair of worn out male trousers was also found at the scene. Pieces of a helmet were also found nearby.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said investigations were underway to establish the cause of death.
“We are still investigating the cause of death. No particulars were found at the scene,” he said.
Insp Ncube appealed to members of the public missing any person to report at any nearest police station.
“We appeal to members of the public with missing relatives to check with their nearest police stations for assistance,” he said.
Last week, Bulawayo Fire Brigade acting chief fire officer, Lynos Phiri said the human remains were found by a fire fighter.
“The human remains were found by one of our men in the afternoon at around 1400hrs as he was putting out a fire behind the university’s residential place,” he said.
A source told Chronicle that few people go to the area where the human remains were found.
“No one uses that route as it is a deserted veld. Had it not been for the fire, the remains would not have been found,” he said.
Another source said the fire did not reach the area were the human remains were found.
“The fire stopped right before the bones. The fire was very strong because it destroyed a lot of vegetation. The man who found the suspected human bones immediately called his colleagues who came and they later notified the university authorities,” he said. — @flora_sibanda
