POLICE in Manicaland had by yesterday (Thursday) impounded 475 vehicles in an operation targeting unregistered and unlicensed vehicles.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the operation also targeted pirate vehicles.

Asst Insp Chinyoka said the operation which was launched on January 15, would run up to January 31.

“Under the blitz, pirating commuter omnibuses have also been impounded. These are commuter omnibuses that are not registered under the ZUPCO franchise, but are transporting the public. Together with smaller vehicles that are also pirating they had become a menace in the city, and so we are leaving no stones unturned as we remove them from the road.

“We have been conducting the operation for four days now and have managed to impound 475 vehicles across the entire province. So far, it has been a successful operation and we are expecting to rid the province of any unroadworthy vehicles,” he said.

He said Manicaland is conducting the operation across its five policing districts since it is a nationwide operation.

Asst Insp Chinyoka said unregistered vehicles were usually used in the commission of dangerous crimes, hence the operation would help in flush criminals out.

“It has become a norm that such vehicles are used in armed robberies, kidnappings as well as hit and run crimes. It is difficult to track and identify such vehicles when crimes are committed as witnesses can only rely on the make and colour,” he said.

He said the blitz would help reduce the commission of dangerous crimes.
