POLICE CALL FOR CALM AS MOTORISTS NAVIGATE HEAVY CONGESTION ALONG MUTARE ROAD

Arron Nyamayaro

POLICE have urged motorists to exercise caution as they navigate heavy traffic congestion along Mutare Road, especially during peak hours.

Chief Superintendent Michael Mumanyi, the Harare District Traffic Office Commander, made this appeal as motorists endured severe traffic delays during the morning rush hour on Monday.

The scene also repeated itself on Tuesday and yesterday.

An interchange is being constructed in the area and, on completion, it will improve the flow of traffic.

Observations by H-Metro have revealed that some drivers, especially the kombi drivers, are creating unauthorised lanes in their attempts to beat the congestion.

On Monday, 32 motorists, including a driver from Inter-Africa Bus company, were arrested and fined for driving against the one-way system and obstructing traffic by creating makeshift lanes.

“As traffic police, we urge motorists to be patient and respect one another on the roads,” said Chief Supt Mumanyi.

“We’ve recognised several challenges faced by motorists during peak hours, including impatience, leading to the obstruction of traffic.

“Police visibility during these times will be increased to help decongest the area.”

Nomore Phiri, chairperson of the Harare District Crime Liaison Committee (CLC) for traffic, said motorists have also complained about potholes along the road.

“The potholes are found just after the railway line at the Mabvuku turn-off and they are damaging vehicles and heightening frustration among drivers.

“These issues also slow traffic, forcing drivers to weave in and out of lanes, significantly worsening congestion.

“Many motorists exhibit impatience, resulting in the creation of makeshift lanes, adding confusion as vehicles compete for space.

“This chaotic situation not only compromises safety but also intensifies delays.”

He added:

“It’s alarming to see some (kombi and mushikashika drivers) banging on vehicles in proper lanes when they want to merge, instigating panic and increasing safety risks.

“While everyone wants to be first, cooperation is essential for ensuring smooth traffic flow.

“I salute the Government’s initiative on the interchange construction at Mabvuku, which is expected to alleviate congestion in the near future.”
