POLICE yesterday assured the nation and visitors to the country that Zimbabwe remains safe and dismissed a United States (US) travel advisory claiming that there is an upsurge in crime and civil unrest in the country.
On Tuesday, the US State Department issued a travel advisory to its citizens intending to travel to Zimbabwe alleging that they should “exercise increased caution in Zimbabwe due to crime and civil unrest.”
The US further claimed that local police are facing resource constraints, hence they were failing to deal with criminal activities.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the safety of Zimbabweans and visitors alike is guaranteed.
He said police are ready to act on any criminal activities as evidenced by their visibility in society.
“Contrary to the Zimbabwe Travel Advisory level 2 issued by the Americans recently, the Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to assure all Zimbabweans and visitors who include tourists to all parts of the country that the country remains safe, peaceful and secure,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
“The ZRP is conducting general patrols, blitz, stop and searches patrols in all Central Business Districts, industrial sites, residential areas and other places which are usually frequented by the public with a view to getting rid of criminality.”
He said those who might have reservations about their safety should not hesitate to contact the police.
