Johannesburg — Police opened fire with rubber bullets on rock throwing Wits University students yesterday afternoon outside the institution’s Great Hall.
Students gathered at the foot of the steps to the building and lobbed projectiles at the security guards who formed a human chain at the doors.
Police then opened fire with rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the students.
On Monday some students ran rampage in the streets of Braamfontein. They started fires, burnt a bus, and looted shops.
Police fired rubber bullets out of the vehicles, and several bystanders, including a priest, were injured in Monday’s chaos.
Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma has told protesting students to return to lectures, while solutions to their demands for free education are being sought.
He had established a task team of ministers who would try to ensure tertiary institutions returned to normal operations, he said in a statement yesterday. — News24.
