Police foil gold smuggling attempt, recover 15,7kg haul

Gold worth more than US$1,5 million has been recovered following a foiled smuggling attempt, leading to the arrest of three suspects on Tuesday.

In a post on social media, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said the 15.7KG worth of gold was intercepted on Tuesday.

“The ZRP confirms that a tip was received on 19/08/25 that gold was about to be smuggled out of the country whilst hidden in a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser vehicle. Detectives from CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit tracked the vehicle leading to the arrest of three suspects and the subsequent recovery of 15,7 kilogrammes of gold valued at USD 1 568 860.00. The gold has since been taken to Fidelity Gold Refinery, Msasa. Investigations are in progress,” said police.
