Police in Harare have increased visibility to curb criminal activities and road accidents in and around the city during this Easter Holiday.
In an interview this Friday, the Officer Commanding, Harare Province Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, confirmed the developments.
“In terms of curbing crime, which is our main core area, as the police we have deployed adequate human resources in all the areas to increase police visibility. We have also rejuvenated the police cycle patrol unit, motorised patrols and we are also going to deploy horse patrols as well as our Canine section which is the Police Dogs Section with a view to thwarting criminal activities,” he said.
Comm Chikunguru said they have put in place adequate measures to ensure a crime and accident-free holiday and that their hotlines have been activated.
Police in Harare, led by Officer Meanwhile, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, conducted a holiday accident awareness campaign at Trabablas Interchange this Friday. They addressed transport operators and passengers with a view to curbing road carnage.
In his address, he urged operators to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy and had all the required documents to be on the road.
He urged operators to avoid speeding, overloading and to adhere to all traffic rules and regulations.
The event was attended by senior police officers from Harare and transport operators.
In an interview, Mr Edmore Tirivanhu Gwengwe, chairman of the Harare Youth Transporters Association (HAYTA) said as operators they have been urging their drivers and conductors to avoid overloading and speeding when travelling on the roads.
He applauded the Government for introducing breathalysers saying police were now testing some of the drivers at most bus terminuses before they embarked on their journeys.
Inter Africa operations director Mr Robert Charles Mukumba also said they were willing to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure an accident-free holiday.
