Police in massive recruitment drive

POLICE have launched a nationwide recruitment exercise for general duty constables, construction technicians, artisans, tailor technicians and band members, while at the same time warning firearm certificate holders that licences can be revoked for misuse and abuse of firearms.

National Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, in a statement, called on suitably qualified Zimbabwean citizens who are physically and medically fit to apply for various posts within the force, saying the exercise is aimed at strengthening human resources and enhancing service delivery. He said applications are open for general duty staffers, construction technicians and artisans, tailor technicians, as well as members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Band.

“Applicants are required to possess at least five Ordinary Level passes with Grade C or better, including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject obtained in not more than two sittings,” said Comm Nyathi.

He said candidates should also be physically and medically fit, capable of completing a five-kilometre road run within 20 minutes for men and 25 minutes for women, while male candidates should have a minimum height of 1,65 metres and female candidates 1,58 metres.

For construction artisans and technicians, he said, police are seeking qualified bricklayers, carpenters, tilers, plumbers, painters, electricians, welders, boilermakers, fabrication engineering technicians and refrigeration mechanics.

Other categories include civil engineering technicians, quantity surveyors and architectural technicians.

“Candidates for these positions must be between 18 and 30 years old and possess relevant national certificates or diplomas from recognised institutions. Relevant industrial experience will be an added advantage. The recruitment drive also extends to tailor technicians in areas such as industrial clothing technology, industrial clothing machine mechanics, clothing fashion designing and clothing design and construction,” Comm Nyathi said.

Meanwhile, aspiring members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Band are expected to be aged between 18 and 30 years and possess at least five Ordinary Level subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Science. Musical qualifications and demonstrated passion for music will be considered an added advantage.

Comm Nyathi said applicants have been instructed to submit handwritten application letters accompanied by a 450 to 500-word life history and at least two contact numbers to officers-in-charge at their nearest police stations before June 24.

Comm Nyathi said only shortlisted candidates would be contacted regarding interview dates and venues.

He went on to warn members of the public against falling prey to fraudsters, emphasising that the organisation does not engage third parties or agents and does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.

In a separate issue, Comm Nyathi said police have expressed concern over growing cases of abuse of firearms by some firearm certificate holders and reminded the public that the regulation, issuance and revocation of firearm certificates rest solely with the Controller of Firearms in terms of the Firearms Act [Chapter 10:09].

He said a firearm certificate may be revoked if the Controller of Firearms is satisfied that the holder is of intemperate habits, of unsound mind or is otherwise unfit to be entrusted with a firearm.

Comm Nyathi said certificates may also be withdrawn where the holder no longer has a valid reason for possessing the weapon.

“Once a decision to revoke a firearm has been made, the Controller will notify the firearm holder in writing. The firearm holder is required to surrender the firearm to the police within 14 days of receiving the notice. Failure to surrender the firearm after revocation constitutes an offence under the Act, and appropriate legal action will be taken,” said Comm Nyathi.
