Police have intensified operations against unroadworthy vehicles, with the blitz — launched on September 23 — expected to run until October 27 this year.

This initiative follows the impounding of 186 vehicles, including kombis, private cars, and buses, which were found to be in violation of various safety regulations. Offences included non-functional lights and the use of makeshift materials such as cardboard boxes or plastic for windows.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the operation is meant to enhance road safety and protect passengers.

“The safety of passengers on our roads is of utmost priority, and all motorists must adhere to the necessary safety standards. We cannot compromise on the well-being of passengers who put their trust in these vehicles to transport them safely,” he said.

He said during this period, police will be conducting thorough inspections of vehicles to ensure compliance with safety regulations and the roadworthy standards set by the authorities. Any vehicles found to be in violation of these standards will be immediately impounded, with strict penalties imposed on the owners.

“Passenger safety is a shared responsibility that extends to all motorists. It is incumbent upon each of us to ensure that our vehicles are in proper working condition and meet the required safety specifications. This not only protects the lives of passengers but also contributes to a safer road environment for everyone,” Comm Nyathi said.

He urged all vehicle owners and operators to proactively check and maintain their vehicles to avoid any potential safety hazards.

“By complying with the regulations and standards set forth by the authorities, motorists can play a crucial role in promoting road safety and preventing accidents caused by unroadworthy vehicles,” Comm Nyathi said.
