THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an operation code-named “Safe Corridor” to crack down on broken-down vehicles that cause road obstructions and congestion.
The nationwide operation targets motorists whose vehicles break down or are involved in activities that obstruct the smooth flow of traffic, particularly in central business districts and surrounding areas.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation, which commenced on August 31, 2026, was targeting, among others, vehicles which break down along highways, major roads and Central Business Districts, with some left unattended for extended periods while not displaying red reflective triangles.
“This poses a danger to other road users and increases the risk of road traffic accidents in the country,” he said.
“Some drivers or motorists are using tree branches, stones, boulders or other objects as reflective red triangles after breakdowns, this is against the country’s laws and road safety measures. The objects are not even removed from the roads after vehicles have been moved.
“Some of the broken-down vehicles are causing chaos and congestion in Central Business Districts and residential areas during traffic peak hours.
“On the other hand, some motorists are parking vehicles at undesignated points or pick passengers within Central Business Districts thereby obstructing the smooth flow of traffic. Operators of transit heavy vehicles are not constantly using designated routes when passing through Central Business Districts and residential areas, thus causing chaos and road accidents.”
He said vehicles found violating the law will be impounded and will only be released upon completion of the requisite clearance procedures and compliance with the relevant legal requirements.
“Vehicle owners will be made to meet the cost of any broken-down vehicle removed from the roads by the Police, Government Departments and local authorities,” he said.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to cooperate with police officers as they carry out their duties of maintaining law and order, road safety, easing traffic congestion and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic throughout the country.
