THE Zimbabwe Republic Police team yesterday left the country for Windhoek, Namibia, for the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation games. The team is led by the ZRP Sports Association chairperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Mekia Tanyanyiwa.
The eighth edition of the SARPCCO games are scheduled for Windhoek, Namibia, from August 16-30 and 195 officers and officials of which 81 are females, left the country. In 2011, ZRP won 55 medals, 19 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze, becoming the regional champions in the games held in Lubumbashi, DRC. Nine countries — DRC, Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Zambia, Mauritius, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe — battled for honours in athletics, soccer, netball, men and women’s volleyball, darts and chess.
SARPCCO comprises 14 member states and was started in 1994 in Swaziland during the regional seminar for police executives before being formally established in Victoria Falls in 1995 . Commissioner-General of Police Augustine Chihuri recently urged the team to be disciplined as they seek to defend their title in Namibia.
Participants compete in athletics, chess, darts, football men and women, netball, volleyball and tennis. Mbada Diamonds sponsored the team with tracksuits, t-shirts, caps, satchels and they also promised to give US$200 to each member of the team that wins a gold medal while Cottco weighed in with US$16 500, CBZ US$10 000 and other companies that came in to support are Doves, Sakunda, Lunar Chickens, Moonlight, Sam Levy, Elkhart Mine, Zinara, ZTA, AVM Africa, Rockshade, Badger Commandant, Tynserv Distributors, Paron Vista and Ranishaw.
