POLICE investigating high profile corruption cases involving firms linked to ousted Vice President Joice Mujuru have retrieved vital documents that could form the core of the probe.Sources confirmed yesterday that much headway had been made in the last few days but wouldn’t divulge the nature of the information they’ve unearthed for fear of jeopardising investigations.

“We’re still in the process of searching the companies and we’ve found some of the evidence we need. We’ve not yet questioned her (Cde Mujuru) but we will definitely question her once the investigations have been completed,” a source revealed.

Our Harare Bureau has it on good authority that findings have since been presented to senior police officers at Police General Headquarters in Harare.

“The matter is being handled as a sensitive matter and senior police are being briefed on a daily basis on latest developments,” said the source.

Police national spokesperson Senior  Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday said she was still to receive details on the latest developments.

Last week, police set up a team of senior detectives to probe firms linked to Mujuru and her other assets as investigations into allegations of corruption and abuse of office levelled against her deepened.

The team, led by Chief Superintendent Luckson Mukazhi, is said to have visited some of the companies to carry out the investigations.

This followed the issuance of warrants by the courts to search companies linked to Mujuru and her other assets after she was fired from government for behaviour inconsistent with the discharge of her duties as a public official.

Provincial magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe issued the search warrants in his chambers, marking the beginning of the probe.

President Mugabe slammed Mujuru and her cabal at the just-ended Zanu-PF 6th National People’s Congress for engaging in acts of corruption and abuse of office and focusing their  time and energy on divisive matters.

He warned that all those involved in corruption would be prosecuted.

Since then, the President has fired 16 government ministers and some deputies for failing to diligently execute their duties.

Mujuru reportedly extorted 10 percent shareholding in firms, demanded bribes, extorted foreign investors, illicitly dealt in diamonds and gold, attempted to defeat the course of justice,  undermined the authority of President Mugabe and allegedly sought to depose him through unconstitutional means.

The First Lady Grace Mugabe exposed Mujuru during her “Meet the People” tours, prompting the investigations that many fear could unravel serious cases of abuse of office and corruption.
