Police have arrested eight suspects believed to be behind a violent robbery spree targeting cellphones in affluent and high-density suburbs across the city.
The gang, allegedly led by a second-hand phone dealer, terrorized residents from December 2024 to May 2025, using machetes and axes to ambush victims in bushy areas.
Bulawayo Police provincial spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the arrests, identifying Kurauone Nkomo (46), a second-hand cellphone dealer operating from Fusini Shops in Makokoba, as the alleged mastermind.
“He is believed to be the chief buyer of all stolen cellphones,” Msebele said.
Other suspects include Chimusaru Tafadzwa (30), Prince Ngulube (18), Leeroy Sibanda (19), Hardlife Sibanda (27), Brian Ndlovu (23), and Nqobile Terrence Ngwenya.
The group is linked to more than 20 robberies in Sauerstown, Queenspark, Khumalo, Entumbane, and Hillside.
According to Inspector Msebele, the gang targeted victims walking alone, often in secluded areas.
“They used weapons to intimidate and rob people of their cellphones,” said Inspector Msebele. “Complainants from different stations positively identified the suspects, leading to their arrests following a tip-off from the public.”
Inspector Msebele commended residents for aiding investigations but urged caution.
“We appreciate the public’s role in fighting crime, which makes it harder for criminals to operate. However, we advise people to avoid bushy pathways, especially when alone, whether during the day or at night.”
