FOUR of six people killed on the spot, with three others critically injured, after their kombi collided with a haulage truck along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway near Rutenga yesterday morning, have been named.
The accident occurred at the 182km peg near Zimbabwe Bio Energy turn-off after the Beitbridge-bound kombi encroached into the opposite lane and collided with a haulage truck travelling north.
Mwenezi District Development Co-ordinator and Civil Protection Unit chair Mr Isaac Mutambara said the injured were taken to Neshuro District Hospital.
“Six people have been confirmed dead on the spot and three were seriously injured and are in hospital at Neshuro,” he said.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the kombi — a Nissan Caravan vehicle with eight passengers on board — collided head-on with a Mercedes Benz truck.
The first four dead were identified by their next of kin while the other two victims have not yet been identified.
He identified the four as Kamukono Musaida (44) of Chimanimani, Blessing Rambiwa (40) of 1530 Chiredzi, Jesina Masimba (35) of Maware Village, Chiredzi and Pellagia Manase (53) of 247 Chiredzi.
Asst Comm Nyathi said the bodies were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortems.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed another fatal road accident which occurred at the 7km peg along Eastern Border Road in Chipinge on Monday.
Three people were killed while three others were injured when a Toyota Corolla Axio with five passengers on board veered off the road to the right before overturning and landing on its right side.
Three passengers died on the spot after being thrown out of the vehicle.
The victims were identified by their next of kin and named as: Troy Nyangombe (20) of Gaza in Chipinge, Joyline Parrafin (18) of Medium Density in Chipinge and Rutendo Chikwanda (20) of Gaza in Chipinge.
The bodies were taken to Chipinge District Hospital mortuary for post-mortems, while one of the injured is admitted at the same hospital. The other two injured are admitted at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare.
