The Harare Civil Court has ordered a Police officer to pay US$120 per month towards the upkeep of his three children, aged 10, eight and four, as well as 50 percent of their school fees.
The order followed an application by Ms Diana Janga, who had approached the court seeking US$300 per month in maintenance from her former husband, Titus Mashanga.
Ms Janga told the court that Mashanga was failing to provide adequately for their children. She presented a breakdown of the children’s monthly needs amounting to US$300 and told the court that she earns about US$200 per month as a vendor.
She told the court that Mr Mashanga is a police officer who earns US$320 and ZiG6 000, which he concurred with.
Ms Janga said she needed US$150 for the children’s fees. He offered to pay US$100 towards school fees and US$50 for children’s upkeep.
He told the court that he is also taking care of his mother, who stays in the rural areas. After hearing from both parties, Magistrate Ms Makonye Janemary ordered Mr Mashanga to pay US$120 per month and half of the children’s school fees.
