Police, residents build trust to improve crime reporting, community safety

KHUMALO Police Station has placed public trust at the centre of its crime-fighting strategy, saying stronger relationships with residents are key to improving crime reporting and tackling common offences affecting the district.

The message was reinforced during the relaunch of the 2026 Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Khumalo Client Service Charter at Northend Shopping Centre on Saturday, where police said the charter sets clear service standards while strengthening collaboration with the community.

Speaking at the event, Inspector Farai Vutahwashe said the charter formalises a covenant between the police and residents that guarantees maximum attention and defined service standards.

“The service charter is a commitment to serve and ensure the safety of the community and the community should understand and be guaranteed that when they are dealing with the police they know what they should expect,” said Insp. Vutahwashe.

He said police would keep existing initiatives open to new members, but would only work with partners who are well intentioned and share the vision of a crime-free and safe society for all.

“We pledge to keep these and other initiatives open to new members. However, we will only work with partners who are well intentioned and share our vision in creating a crime free and safe society for all,” said Insp Vutahwashe.

He encouraged learners to join the station’s security awareness and civic responsibility programmes saying the police believe in “catching them young” to build a culture of lawfulness.

Insp Vutahwashe said unlawful entry and privacy-related offences remain among the most common crimes in the policing district, particularly during winter when longer nights provide cover for criminals. Drug and substance abuse also continues to be a major concern.

“Cases that we usually come across this side are of unlawful entry and privacy especially this winter season, perpetrators usually take advantage of long nights and the dark atmosphere,” he said. “Drug and substance abuse crime that is usually committed” said Insp. Vutahwashe.

He said that the service charter was earlier launched by the Police Commissioner-General, Stephen Mutamba, and it is now their responsibility to transfer from national level to provincial level, district level and to station level.

Insp Vutahwashe apologised for the shortcomings that may have taken place in the past and promised that the era of excuses is over.

During the event, Sergeant Chipiwa Gwafa, who is in charge of communications, thanked everyone who was present at the relaunch.

She said the event was a reminder that the community partnership comes in many forms both large and small.

“Today is about enduring partnership between business, community and ZRP. Business against crime has long stood as a pillar of collaborating crime prevention and continued engagement,” she said.
