POLICE will start maintaining a database of all corruption cases in the country as a way of giving them a basis to combat the scourge.

This is contained in a revised police Client Service Charter which was launched on Thursday by the Officer Commanding Bulawayo Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Stephen Mutamba.

He said the ZRP has a constitutional mandate of maintaining law and order in the country and thus puts its clients at the forefront in pursuit of that obligation.

“ZRP is reinvigorating its police service charter launched in 1995 through the re-launch of an improved ZRP client service charter. Our major objective as an organisation is to improve service delivery in line with the government’s robust stance accurately captured in the ZimAsset blue print,” he said.

Snr Ass Comm Mutamba said they were re-launching a social contract between the ZRP, as a service provider and the public who are their clients and recipients of their services.

“The ZRP client service charter spells out the services we offer as an organisation and also stipulates the commitments and standards for service delivery, which we believe you as our clients have a right to expect and enjoy.

“The charter can’t be fully implemented without the full cooperation and participation of the Zimbabwean community and so everyone plays a role in enhancing the quality of police services in the country.”

According to the police charter, all people have the right to carry out an arrest of any individual who would have committed a crime in terms of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act.

“As provided by Section 39 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act, Chapter 9: 07, every male inhabitant in Zimbabwe between the age of 16 and 60 years is , when called upon by a police officer, authorized and required to assist that police officer in making any lawful arrest,” reads the charter.

“Clients have an obligation to give their suggestions or comments with a view to improve police service delivery. Clients also have to clearly express their particular needs from the police or what they feel they should be helped with.”
