The officer commanding National Traffic Bulawayo, Superintendent Peter Mupambo, confirmed the development on Monday.
In an interview, Supt Mupambo said the operation, which is also aimed at eliminating illegal pick-up points in the city centre has been code named “Flush out touts Phase One”.
“We will soon be conducting an operation called ‘Flush out touts phase one’, to eliminate touts, illegal pick-up points and maintain order in the city,” said Supt Mupambo.
“The preparations for the operation are at an advanced stage and we are still putting the resources together. Before the end of this week I will be in a position to confirm when exactly the operation will be conducted.”
Supt Mupambo said the police in the city were working hard to restore order and safety on the city’s roads.
“The operation is expected to be a massive exercise to maintain order in the city and we will be working with our stakeholders to make the operation a success. We will continue to pounce on anyone who breaks the law especially on our roads, because they create confusion and create accidents,” said Supt Mupambo.
Last week, police said they had arrested 2 280 drivers, impounded 742 vehicles and collected fines amounting to $32 055 in an operation to decongest the city centre.
The operation was launched in July.
The police were barring kombis from passing through the city centre with passengers and forcing them to drop and pick up passengers at Basch Street Terminus popularly known as Egodini or at the rank between 3rd Avenue and Lobengula Street, depending on where the kombi would be coming from.
The operation was running concurrently with the Bulawayo City Council’s operation to recover about $100 000 for parking discs that were not paid for by motorists.
