Police to name seven miners killed in Silobela incident

POLICE will soon name the seven artisanal miners who died in Silobela in the Midlands Province after the shaft they were working in collapsed due to flooding.

This will occur once identification is complete and next of kin have been informed.

The incident occurred when the shaft the miners were working in flooded following heavy rains, trapping them underground.

In a statement, National Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.

“The ZRP confirms a mine accident which occurred on  November 5, 2025 at Auriga 47 Mine, Base Mineral Block, Nzwananzwi Village, Silobela.

“Seven artisanal miners were trapped after the shaft they were working in flooded following heavy rains.

“The bodies of the seven victims were retrieved from the shafts on November 7, 2025. The names of the victims will be released in due course once they have been identified by their next of kin.”

According to reports, the miners were working inside the shaft when it suddenly collapsed, trapping them underground.
