Police transfers are guided: Nyathi

Government ministries and departments have internal procedures they must fulfil before they decide whether or not cases must be concluded administratively or criminally, police said yesterday.In a statement, national police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, yesterday said police would only react to reports made to them and carry out the investigations.

“The ZRP would like to inform the nation that the media are not Charge Offices therefore if anyone has a case to report to the police they are free to approach the police Charge Offices found all over the country.

“Some people think that the police just arrest on the basis of the media who do not attend court to give evidence,” he said.

He said professionalism on the part of the force was a key requirement of their service charter.

He said the Constitution required or demanded them to be professional.

Chief Supt Nyathi was responding to reports in the media recently that some police officers were transferred to different locations for dragging their feet in investigating high-profile crime involving senior government officials. He said transfers within the force and the world over were routine and normal.

“This is the case with other Government departments. In fact, police transfers are guided by the organisation’s human resources policy, skills and competences required for a particular task, post or position.

“There is no sinister motive with regard to the manner in which regular transfers are implemented by the police to address specific job requirements in the service,” he said.

He said the force would continue to be guided by its constitutional mandate in dealing with any case, which would have been formally brought to their attention.
