Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)officers have been challenged to take sports seriously as it enables them to keep fit and remain disciplined when discharging their duties. Speaking at the 2019 Commissioner-General of Police Sports Gala in Harare yesterday, Deputy Commissioner-General (Crime) Stephen Mutamba said sports go hand in hand with discipline.

“Without discipline, it is always difficult to make the grade,” he said. “I am delighted to note that discipline pivoted the entire episode of this competition. This is how it should be.

“You should always remember that as police officers, a high degree of discipline, honesty, transparency and professionalism is required of you at all times.”

Deputy Comm-Gen Mutamba said during the three-day sporting competition, they were able to learn some vital lessons and values in life.

“These include teamwork, sportsmanship, work ethic, resilience and dedication, just to mention a few,” he said. “Sports also build good health, confidence and discipline. It also transforms players into leaders and also teaches participants how to strive for a goal, handle mistakes and cherish growth opportunities.”

Deputy Comm-Gen Mutamba said the gala provided them with the opportunity to select a team that will represent the ZRP during the 10th edition of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) bi-annual games slated for Luanda, Angola, from August 1 to 15 this year.

They will also represent the force during the 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo, Japan.

He said the force had performed exceedingly well in the previous SARPCCO Games and won in four consecutive editions.

Deputy Comm-Gen Mutamba said the sporting competition had come at a time when the force was undergoing a rebranding exercise.

“I, therefore, challenge all sportspersons to look beyond sport and uphold both the organisational and national visions,” he said. “As you participate at various levels, remember to raise the organisational flag high.

“Remember to market the good name of our beautiful motherland and exhibit good behaviour synonymous with Zimbabweans.”

The ceremony was attended by senior officers with participants  drawn from the ZRP’s 17 provinces.
