Police warn against circulating false information on social media

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has said it has taken note of malicious reports being circulated on social media about senior officer, Assistant Commissioner Tawonei Nyazema (Operations Harare).

He is being accused of involvement in corruption scandals and extorting transport operators, and that he is now under investigation.

According to the Police, these allegations are malicious and aimed at tarnishing the name of the police service as they carry out their day-to-day duties.

In an interview, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the issue has since been brought to the attention of Police Commissioner General Godwin Matanga and investigations are in progress.

“We are aware of messages being circulated on social media and this has been brought to the attention of the Commissioner General of Police. The ZRP has taken note of the allegations and investigations are in progress.

“We will however issue a detailed statement in due course,” he said.

This comes after some people who are being arrested during the ongoing operations are accusing some senior police officers in Harare of being involved or linked with corrupt deals.

These people, according to police, do not have the required papers to be on the road or operating.

Police, however, said during the ongoing operation they will not hesitate to arrest anyone who violates the country’s laws without fear or favour.
