THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has warned motorists and public transport operators against speeding, reckless overtaking and overloading as schools across the country reopen for the third term on Monday.
The warning comes as thousands of learners travel back to schools, with some boarding school pupils expected to make long journeys across the country ahead of the September 8 opening.
In a statement yesterday, ZRP Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged parents, guardians and school authorities to ensure learners use safe and reliable transport.
“Parents, guardians and school authorities should ensure that children use safe and reliable transport. Where possible, learners should avoid travelling at night, while vehicles hired to transport them should be roadworthy and suitable for carrying passengers,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
The police also warned transport operators and drivers against overloading vehicles or carrying learners alongside goods and luggage in a manner that compromises their safety.
Drivers were urged to avoid speeding, reckless overtaking, negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or dangerous drugs.
Motorists were further urged to exercise caution near schools, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and other areas frequently used by learners.
The police also called on parents, guardians and school authorities to remain vigilant against criminal activities targeting learners and schools.
Schools were discouraged from keeping large amounts of cash on their premises, while parents and guardians were encouraged to use banks and other approved financial institutions when paying school fees and other school-related charges.
Commissioner Nyathi said the police would intensify road safety and traffic enforcement operations, patrols and other policing measures throughout the country to enhance the safety and security of learners.

The public was urged to promptly report criminal activities, suspicious conduct and traffic violations at the nearest police station.
