Police warning on pirate taxis

POLICE in Bulawayo have warned members of the public against boarding pirate taxis saying most are used to commit crimes such as robbery, rape and murder.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said some of the pirate taxis are difficult to trace as they operate without vehicle registration numbers.

She warned owners of the vehicles that they will be held responsible for any criminal activities linked to their cars.

“It is quite sad to note that some of these vehicles are being used in the commission of serious crimes like kidnapping, rape, robbery and murder. Police will not hesitate to impound these vehicles,” said Insp Simango.

“Please be advised that according to the law, police are entitled to confiscate and withhold any article or item which can afford evidence with regard to the commission of any offence.”

Insp Simango said police will descend on those who break the law as they have observed that traffic related crimes are on the increase.

“Police shall arrest all offenders and impound all unroadworthy vehicles that pick up and drop passengers in undesignated places like 6th Avenue, along Robert Mugabe Way, near Fort 11 and near City Hall.

“We, therefore, call upon the owners of these vehicles to stop their operations and help tame the traffic jungle,” she said.
