POLITICAL parties yesterday rounded up their campaign rallies across provinces with a call for the electorate to vote peacefully in tomorrow’s harmonised elections. The parties, Zanu-PF, MDC, MDC-T and Zapu have expressed satisfaction with the preparations for the plebiscite.
Zanu-PF Politburo member Dr Obert Mpofu who has been mobilising support for the party across Matabeleland North yesterday concluded his rallies in Ntabazinduna, Umguza constituency, where he is contesting.
Dr Mpofu, who addressed hundreds of people, took the opportunity to send his condolence message to families of the eight party supporters who died in an accident on their way to his rally in Nyamandlovu on Sunday.
He also visited the injured who are still admitted at Mpilo Central Hospital.
Dr Mpofu reminded the electorate that tomorrow was a day that they have been afforded an opportunity to elect into office a party that would fulfil their aspirations.
“The day we have long waited for has come and this is yet again an opportunity for us to either choose continued development or destroy it. We have to know where we are going,” said Dr Mpofu.
“I have been to all districts in the provinces and the message is the same. I am here to remind you of the need to vote peacefully and remain steadfast in support of Zanu-PF.
“Our first candidate is President Mugabe, myself for this constituency and Zanu-PF councillors in your respective wards. This election is for the empowerment of women and the youths.”
Dr Mpofu said Zanu-PF would not fail the nation as it was committed to fulfilling all its promises and urged voters to ensure that the revolutionary party reclaims all the seats it lost in the last election.
Zanu-PF candidates in Hwange West also urged voters to support the revolutionary party in order to reap benefits from the abundant natural resources found in the province.
The candidates held rallies in Victoria Falls, Zambezi National Park and Jambezi over the weekend where they implored voters to vote for a party that seeks total empowerment of the people.
Ward 8 aspiring councillor, Cde Clever Mashonganyika said locals were not benefiting from the tourism sector, a major economic driver in the province.
“Zanu-PF is calling for total empowerment, therefore voting for the revolutionary party would guarantee empowerment for the people in this region,” he said.
His counterpart in Ward 1, Cde Mathew Muleya concurred saying Zanu-PF was the only party that serves the people’s interests.
“A lot of villagers are now plot holders, some are now running conservancies and are into safari hunting. Whoever thought that blacks could run conservancies? These gains should therefore be protected by voting for Zanu-PF,” he said.
Cde Prayer Moyo, candidate for Ward 3 in the council, said the MDC-T led council had failed dismally to deliver.
In Masvingo, Zanu-PF candidates also rounded up their campaigns by calling on people to vote resoundingly for revolutionary party.
On average all the 26 constituencies held 10 rallies each.
The candidates said tomorrow would be a crucial day for Masvingo and vowed to retain all the seats the party lost in 2008.
Masvingo Urban National Assembly candidate Dr Daniel Shumba said people in Masvingo were geared to bury the MDC-T tomorrow.
“Tomorrow’s election will end MDC-T dominance in Masvingo Urban. I have done enough homework and failure is not an option,” he said.
Gutu Central candidate, Cde Lovemore Matuke said the elections were meant to make history for the revolutionary party in Masvingo.
“We have grown stronger in terms of support base. We have a number of youths who have joined the party and I can confirm that they have registered to vote for the party. I am confident that I am going to win the elections,” he said.
Cde Matuke said all Zanu-PF candidates in the province were out to throw MDC-T into the dust bins of political history.
“Zanu-PF is people oriented and many have realised that now. We are going to bury all opposition parties in this province,” he said.
Chivi Central candidate Cde Ephraim Gwanongodza concurred:
“I held rallies in 10 wards where not less than 3 000 people attended. MDC-T stands no chance of winning, it will instead face humiliation,” he said.
Masvingo Central candidate Cde Edmund Mhere said he was expecting nothing short of victory as the electorate had shown strong allegiance to Zanu-PF.
“For the past five years Masvingo Central has been in the hands of MDC-T but there is nothing to show for it,” he said.
MDC-T provincial chairman Mr Wilstaff Sitemere also said his party had prepared well and was looking forward to winning all seats in Masvingo.
He said the party managed to field candidates in all constituencies and they have done enough work to enable them to romp to victory.
