THE odour coming from tap water in Harare is being caused by the poor water quality at Lake Chivero, a source said yesterday.
The source said Lake Chivero was heavily polluted, resulting in the water quality deteriorating. He was quick to say, however, that there was no harm in drinking the water.
Harare City Council was drawing water from low levels in the lake because the water level had gone down and more chemicals were needed to treat the water.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
Lake Chivero is one of the most polluted dams in the country yet it is the major source of water for the country’s capital, Harare.
There is need for the Government and other stakeholders including companies that discharge waste into rivers and streams that feed into Lake Chivero to work together to ensure a drastic reduction in the amount of waste that is going into the water body.
Sense plays a big role in determining our action. When it comes to things like food, our ability to ingest is determined by our sense of smell, taste and sight. In this regard, the water that was coming out of the taps had an odour and advising people to drink such water was ill-advised if it was said to be not safe for drinking.
