Polocrosse teams gear up for tournament

THE vice-chairman of the Bulawayo Polocrosse Club, Richard Ellman-Brown believes the four Zimbabwe teams to take part in the Bowser tournament at Bulawayo Country Club this weekend will get adequate competition. National selectors will field two teams in both the men and women’s categories ahead of a quadrangular series in South Africa next month.

The national teams will be preparing for a tournament to feature the hosts South Africa, United Kingdom and Zambia.

“Absolutely, the competition will be up to it. Our national teams will get a good run ahead of the quadrangular competition in South Africa. Like the men’s teams will compete in the Upper A division which has enough quality in it with some being players who went to the World Cup last year,” said Ellman-Brown.

He said the experience in some of the former players would give the national teams the much needed exposure to quality competition.

The BPC vice-chairman said the event would attract 72 players drawn from Chipinge, Marondera North, Harare and Matabeleland who are all keen to make an impact at one of the biggest tournaments of the sport in the country.

The event is held every year in honour of Jeremy Phillipson who died a couple of years ago on his way from home after a practice session at the Bulawayo Polocrosse Club at the Country Club.

Ellman-Brown said the pitch which would be used for the tournament was in a perfect condition to provide an ideal environment for a good event
The first match would be at 8am today and activities will run until 5pm with the final matches set for tomorrow afternoon.
