Poor service delivery angers Mvuma residents

Midlands Bureau Chief

RESIDENTS of Mvuma town are up in arms with Chirumhanzu Rural District Council over poor service delivery which has left them exposed to water-borne diseases. For months, they had been grappling with poor service delivery. From perennial water challenges and erratic garbage collection to pothole-ridden roads, the quality of services seemed to deteriorate by the day.

One of the residents, Mrs Mejury Sibanda said they now feared an outbreak of water-borne diseases.“It’s been some time since we last received tap water. We now fear water-borne diseases such as cholera as the local authority is not showing signs of rectifying the problems,” she said.Mrs Sibanda said the local authority is also struggling to repair street lights, which is exposing residents to mugging at night.

Another resident, Mr Tinei Chipadza said poor solid waste management is one of the major challenges they are facing as residents.“One of our biggest challenges is the aspect of proper waste management. We don’t remember the last time garbage was collected by the local authority. Each time we raise the issue they tell us that refuse trucks are down, and sometimes we are told there is no fuel,” he said.

Chirumhanzu RDC chief executive officer, Mr Lovemore Chatikobo, attributed their challenges to lack of resources.
“We are currently incapacitated to undertake and carry out the mandate as expected, so we are trying to borrow money so that we can improve.

As of now, we don’t have a front-end loader for garbage collection and road construction,” he said.“However, this time around when we get our share of devolution funds, we will buy the critical machinery.”The Government has since given the local authority an ultimatum to come up with a workable plan to address the issues bedevilling the town as a matter of urgency.
