The highly-publicised “Official Summer Disc Jockey Jamboree”, which had Kwekwe’s DJ Stavo as the main act, failed to attract the anticipated crowd. The open air show was held at Motor Action Sports Club, Eastlea, in Harare last Friday by Afrimune in a bid to create unity between fans and artistes.
Show organiser Mathias Bangure said the gig went according to plan.
“I understand there is a low turn-out but the show is going according to plan.
“It is just that we had some technical challenges, which we managed to fix.
“The sound system was poor because of the missing jack but we fixed that too,” he said.
The turnout was below expectations for the DJs such as Hitman, Kimble Rogers, Nivek, Ash Styles and Stavo, who had prepared their playlists.
DJ Ash Styles and Nivek were the first to take to the stage and gave a polished act, paving the way for DJ Stavo, who performed in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Despite the sub-standard sound system, the duo of “The Game Recognises Game” fame managed to keep the handful of fans dancing when they played a mixed set of hip-hop, local and Jamaican dancehall and some Nigerian (naija) hit songs.
Regardless of the small crowd present and the late start of the show, award-winner DJ Stavo, whose real name is Steven Sanders, managed to put up a sterling performance as he sailed well through his turn-tables.
In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, the disc jockey said he was happy to perform in Harare soon after clinching a ZIMA award.
“It is a great opportunity for me here performing for the first time at the open air venue. I am not very disappointed with the low turnout because I accept any audience and those that came enjoyed,” he said.
He said Harare is full of fun-loving people.
“We need good promoters and opportunity to showcase talent as there is a lot of talent in the music sector. To develop the sector, relevant people should support us as sometimes artistes struggle to make ends meet,” he said.
DJ Stavo gave the audience a surprise when he played his latest song called “Izinto” featuring Teddy Bears, of which he described as, “Unoda Zvinhu” track.
DJ Stavo has videos that are making waves on regional platform, Channel O.
