Porter opens new chapter for Sables

THERE is no doubt the Sables must be strong if they are to be competitive against England, Wales and Tonga at the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

And there is also no doubt the coming in of new big names into the squad for the World Cup will also be a big boost.

But that as well will come with its challenges.

Reality is some players that were part of the qualification may not make it to Australia and the coach, Pieter Benade, is aware he has to make difficult decisions ahead.

Stormers forward Gary Porter, who has confirmed his availability for Zimbabwe as the Sables look to build the depth of their squad ahead of their return to the Rugby World Cup stage, will be the first of such cases.

It is a new chapter.

Porter (29), qualifies for Zimbabwe, who last appeared at the tournament in 1991, through his Bulawayo-born mother. Standing two metres tall and weighing 115kg, Porter will give the Sables’ tight five some extra ballast, as they prepare to face England, Wales and Tonga in Pool F in 22 months’ time.

He has previously spent time with Western Province and in the English Championship with Ealing Trail-finders.

“We are in constant communication with players and we are happy with the progress of possible personnel who are showing interest in playing for the Sables,” said Sables head coach Benade.

“One such example is the Stormers lock Gary Porter, whose mother was born in Bulawayo, and has confirmed he is available to play. We are looking to build the tight five, so Porter being added to the second row stocks will be a significant addition.”

As the World Cup draws nearer the numbers of Zimbabwean players playing at top teams around the world and declaring availability, will also increase. Some will be taking a chance and some genuine talent that adds depth and Benade knows he has huge task in his hands. — Zimpapers Sports Hub/ rugbypass.com
