TRIATHLON Zimbabwe national coach Pamela Fulton is hopeful of an exciting season with most of their regular athletes turning up for the first selection event over the weekend at Mt Pleasant Pool.
The weekend’s programme saw participants taking part in triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon and aquabike events.
It also included the Corporate Challenge Series.
The youth and junior triathletes were taking part in their first selection race of the season.
Most of the regular athletes such as Rachel O’Donoghue, Callum Smith, Zander Botha, Matthew Hildebrand and Olivia Beamish turned up for the race.
Stanley Chasakara is also back after missing the previous season due to an injury.
“Today being the first selection race, it was nice to see some new athletes out there from some of the new schools that have joined our sport.
“In aquathlon, we had great support – 16 athletes doing aqua fun. So, yeah, fantastic day. Let’s hope that the rest of the season continues this way.
“It’s always good to have those good old faithful athletes who are right up there at the top of our juniors,” said Fulton.
The national association is also looking at increased participation for the Junior Schools Series, which is comprised of three races throughout the season.
The first one is pencilled for October
“This season we have got the school series, and today we had a couple of new schools that came out to try the aquathon, and now they are determined to get bicycles so that they can compete in the school series and the triathlon event.
“Looking forward to seeing how that junior series develops throughout the season,” Fulton said.
