DELTAFORCE Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts Academy have announced the return of the “Pound for Pound” series with a murky tournament set for Harare on July 14.
The “Pound for Pound” series had fallen into obliteration with Deltaforce Academy concentrating their efforts on the history-making super bantamweight boxer Kuda “Take Money” Chiwandire.
The latter has dominated the boxing discourse over the past year after first winning the World Boxing Council interim title against Catherine Phiri of Zambia before retaining the crown with another victory over Mexican Zulina Munoz.
The triumph over Munoz gave the 27-year-old the right to challenge for the WBC gold belt against Mexican holder Yamileth Mercado with the Zimbabwean losing the fight on points three months ago.
And it’s now back to square one for Deltaforce Academy who have reintroduced the Pound for Pound series.
The stable have also announced their partnership with an apparel company Motion who have made one of Deltaforce’s boxer Ndodana “Black Hammer” Ncube their brand ambassador.
Famed Namibian promoters MTC Nestor Sunshine Fitness and Boxing Academy have also twinned with Deltaforce.
The headline fight for the July 14 edition of the “Pound for Pound” series features Ncube and Isa Alia Phiri who battles it out for the national title over 12 rounds.
Ncube and Phiri had a war of words during a media briefing in Harare yesterday, with Phiri declaring his interest to capture the belt.
“I am someone who is always prepared for a fight. I don’t count Ncube that much. I haven’t faced him before and this will be his first and last time to fight me because I will teach him a good lesson,” said Phiri.
“He has many fights under his belt as compared to me and he is also older than me but guess what, he is just a small boy who needs a good boxing lesson. I will gladly teach him one on July 14.
“He is not even confident with his words and I will let him taste how it feels to fight me. I am ready”.
Ncube responded by saying he will knock out his opponent.
“I am going to floor him and he will know exactly what it means to be in the ring. I am ready to fight him and knock him out,” said Ncube.
“He can talk a lot but I will use my hands to respond to his rantings. Come July 14, he will have to keep his mouth shut”.
Super-featherweight star Peter Pambeni also returns to the ring after a lengthy period and he will face off against Namibia’s Sabastianus Nathanael in the main supporting bout.
