THE Zimbabwe Power-lifting Federation will hit the ground running by hosting a national event dubbed Africa and Arnolds Classics qualifier tomorrow.
The event, was initially scheduled for the National Sports Stadium, but is now likely to be moved to Alexandra Sports Club.
They are still in talks with the Sports Commission.
Harare Province chairman, Moses Nyamhotsi, said they were happy they can now manage to host a national event after the reopening of sporting activities.
“We are looking forward to hosting our first power-lifting event, in over a year, when we host the third edition of the Arnolds Classics and Africa Championships qualifiers, this weekend,’’ he said.
“We are grateful the government has given us an opportunity to come up with tournaments, as there is need for us to prepare for international events, coming up in November.
“After we host the qualifiers this weekend it will give athletes ample time to prepare.
“We were worried with the previous situation although we were working behind closed doors, through virtual meetings.
“The event will have three categories namely dead-lift, bench-press and squats and Zimbabwe is likely to have many representatives at the prestigious Africa championships.’’ He said focus was also on the international events.
“We have been at the Games twice, when we sent three athletes, and they did fairly well so we are expecting to have other representatives, at the upcoming events.
“I am happy with the support we are getting from our technical director, Audrey Svongwa, who has supported the sport so much.’’
