THE Municipality of Chinhoyi has dismissed reports that the water woes affecting the town since March were a result of a decomposing body of a mentally-challenged woman, which is clogging pipes.

Council public relations officer, Mr Tichaona Mlauzi, said indeed they are struggling to adequately provide water to residents, adding that the situation had been exacerbated by power outages.

“The water situation has been worsened by persistent power cuts and not any other thing as has been insinuated,” said Mr Mlauzi.

“We are getting about five hours of power at the water plant on a daily basis and that is not enough as we need power the whole day to pump water.

“There is no decomposing corpse affecting the flow of water; it’s all untrue.”

Mr Mlauzi said they are negotiating with ZESA so they get uninterrupted power to be able to provide water to residents.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Margaret Chitove, also dismissed claims there was a decomposing body that was recently retrieved from the pipes.

Chinhoyi Residents Trust representative, Mr Peter Liwanda, called on the council to properly secure the water treatment plant.

“It’s very easy for one to buy into the purported claims as the area is not properly fenced and secured,” he said.

The message of the decomposing body, is said to have been generated on April Fool’s Day, with WhatsApp users forwarding it numerous times.
