ZESA-owned Powertel Communications defied all odds when it scooped two top awards at the recently held Zimbabwe Investment Awards 2016.
The State-owned telecoms firm scooped the overall Chairman Lifetime Achievement Award and investor of the year in recognition of its hard work in technological developments that have impacted the livelihoods of Zimbabweans after successful implementation of its aggregation facility.
The Internet service provider also scooped the overall Telecoms Company of the Year Award followed by NetOne, TelOne among other companies.
The event was organised by the Zimbabwe Investment Authority and celebrated by local and international companies at Cresta Sango’s pool in Harare on Friday.
Speaking at the event, ZIA chairman Dr Nigel Chanakira commended the company’s success saying this was in line with job investments, growth investments and innovations that contribute to economic development.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was won by Econet Wireless in 2015.
Event organisers said Powertel was appointed as the aggregator of the most popular service Powerplus prepaid electricity and to date has generated employment creation for the nation as seen by over 30 000 physical channels established to date.
Powertel marketing manager Mr Prosper Mutswiri underscored his company’s commitment to innovation, customer driven systems and nationalistic superfluous products that will address the needs of the Zimbabwean customer.
Powertel is Zimbabwe’s licensed converged telecommunications operator. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Zesa Holdings mandated with providing total ICT solutions for the power utility and the Zimbabwean market.
The firm provides backbone capacity (carrier service to local operators and big customers, virtual private network services and remote access connectivity), Internet service provision (wholesale, business and mobile), seamless branch to branch connectivity and Voice Over Internet Protocol – VoIP) among other services.
Powertel has invested in the CDMA mobile network, which allows it to provide consumer facing services.
To that effect it rolled out a distribution network of over 167 access points across the country through a commission structured model.
This has created employment for the Zimbabwean market thereby empowering the nation.
