The National Aids Council (NAC) has urged students in tertiary institutions to practice safe sex instead of relying on morning-after pills.
Addressing students from various universities across the country at a workshop in Gweru last week, a NAC official Mr Shearer Beremauro, who was facilitating the workshop said over reliance on morning-after pills was aiding the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.
“Besides spreading sexually transmitted diseases relying on morning- after pills has a long-term bearing on the girl child as these pills have their own side effects,” he said.
Mr Beremauro said students should always practice safe sex and always make sure that they used protection.
He said unprotected sex was rife at higher learning institution, a situation which was worrying.
“The reason why we decided to hold this workshop is to mainly conscientise the girl child on the advantages of safe sex over the use of morning after pills, which is rife in higher learning institutions,” he said.
Five universities were represented at the workshop.
Participants also distributed condoms around Senga where most of the students at Midlands State University reside.
