Pre-school karateka aims high

the plate.
Mahove, who will be in Grade One next year, is already displaying styles characteristic of Bruce Lee and two weeks ago he collected a gold medal for the youngest karateka at the International Federation Karate Kyokushin-kai tournament.

He was influenced by his father who took up karate in the 1970s rose to brown belt level. The young boy is known as “Professor” due to his intelligence.
Having trained with Clover Musariri, an instructor at Mai Musodzi Hall in Mbare, Fallen Mahove, father to young Tapiwa, initiated his son into the same discipline.
“Tapiwa is the only boy among my four children, just like the family I was born into. Karate instilled discipline in me and I want the same for my son. Even people who meet my son are impressed by his behavior at such a tender age,” he said.

Tapiwa started training at Mai Musodzi Hall in 2009 and, at five, he has already started winning medals.
“I want to continue winning and collect medals,” he said with boldness.
Mahove said his son is academically good and would want him to reach the highest possible levels of education.

Crediting karate training with his boy’s humility, Mahove says even when offended, Tapiwa does not fight back but prefers to walk away.
“The fact that he understands that his skills are not to take advantage of shows the depth of his intelligence. He knows, however, that with karate you have to stand your ground.”

The boy’s sponsor of the young boy, Utete said he would commit to such talent despite karate being a discipline where sponsors rarely flock.
“I am impressed by Tapiwa and his future in karate is full of promises. I have pledged my support that whatever tournament he wants to participate in he will take part,” he said.

Musariri said girls should come in and participate as it gives them an edge in an abusive environment.
