A PREGNANT Bindura woman outsmarted a would-be rapist by luring him into a trap that landed him behind bars for two decades.
Robert Sebastian (39) of Withington Farm was slapped with a 20-year sentence by the Bindura Regional Magistrates Court after being found guilty of attempting to rape the 21-year-old expectant mother.
The horror incident occurred on 7 August when the woman was walking to Foothills Clinic for a check-up. Sebastian pounced after a casual greeting, grabbing her jacket before dragging her into nearby bushes.
“He tripped her to the ground and attempted to rape her,” the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said in a statement.
Thinking fast, the victim convinced him to follow her home, pretending she would “enjoy the act” in private since she lived alone. Unbeknown to him, she was leading him straight into a waiting ambush.
At her homestead, the woman alerted her husband and neighbours who pounced on the predator and handed him over to police. Torn clothing from the struggle and her testimony sealed his fate in court.
“This conviction demonstrates that the justice system will impose tough penalties on those who prey on women and vulnerable persons,” the NPAZ stressed.
Sebastian will now spend 20 years behind bars as authorities called on communities to keep working with law enforcement to protect women from gender-based violence.
