THE Nedbank Premier Netball League boss Rita Mnkandla at the weekend demonstrated that sports leadership should be about willingness to serve and humility.
Someone at her position would have chosen Bulawayo or Harare to be at and witness top league action.
But Mnkandla decided to be part of history as alongside clubs in her league were part of the history making script. She travelled to Gokwe to witness for the first time some league games being hosted at Cheziya High School, the first time league games were played at a rural centre.
Zhombe Chibbs funded by Hwange based businessman Brian Chibaya were the hosts of the games.
This is part of partnership with sponsors Nedbank where the Premier Netball League seeks to take the sport to the masses with some of the games being taken to smaller urban centres as well.
The League has seen netball grow from strength with numbers among adult players out of school increasing as the sport takes its rightful place as second to football in terms of numbers and participation among women Under-40.
“I want to thank the Cheziya High School and Midlands community for hosting such a gala. This is a historic moment for netball in Zimbabwe. For the first time we have brought Premier Netball here and I impressed by what I have seen,” Mnkandla said.
She said her attendance was a demonstration of their commitment to grassroots netball development and its policy of leaving no place and no one behind.
Mnkandla was happy with the quality of the courts offered for the games and applauded organisers.
The bubble was one of three for the weekend that saw a majority of the teams in action.
ZDF were the highest scorers in one single match after beating Zhombe Queens 109-09 to maintain pole position.
