In a statement, ZimStat director general Mr Mutasa Dzinotizei said the census was a national project requiring everyone’s participation.
“It needs to be stressed that the census is a national project that requires the support of everyone.
“Although ZimStat is the main implementing agency, the support of all Government ministries and departments, private sector, civil society organisations and research and training institutions is vital for conducting a successful census,” he said.
At least US$37,2 million has been made available for the programme.
It however requires a further US$2 million. A total of 31 000 enumerators and 6 000 supervisors have since been recruited for the census.
The bulk of the funds have already been secured from Government and the donor community.
Mr Dzinotizei said the census would provide accurate data on important issues.
“In order to successfully plan for and implement economic and social development policies, administrative programmes or scientific research, it is necessary to have reliable and detailed data on the size, composition, distribution and other benchmark statistics on the population. The census provides this much needed information,” he said.
He said enumerators would move door-to-door during the census days adding that the enumeration would be completed within 10 days.
The full results of the exercise are expected early next year.
Government has since rescheduled schools’ closure to today to allow teachers, who form the bulk of the enumerators take part in the exercise.
