President appoints new Commander Zimbabwe National Army

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa yesterday appointed decorated military commander and diplomat, Lieutenant-General Anselem Sanyatwe, to the position of Commander Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA). 

The appointment is with immediate effect.

It follows the retirement of outgoing Commander ZNA, Lieutenant-General David Sigauke.

Lt-Gen Sigauke led the ZNA from 2021 after his promotion following the death of his predecessor and national hero, Lt-Gen Edzai Chimonyo. 

At the time of his appointment, Lt-Gen Sanyatwe was Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Tanzania and has been recalled to lead the country’s army. 

Lt-Gen Sanyatwe is a military strategist of note and has decades of experience in the army.

He is also a veteran of Zimbabwe’s war of liberation. 

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, announced the appointment. 

“His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has, with immediate effect and in terms of Section 216(2) as read with Sections 89 and 110(2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20), appointed Lieutenant-General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe to the position of Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army. 

“The appointment follows the retirement of the outgoing Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General David Sigauke,” said Dr Rushwaya.
