Today marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s journey towards sustainable mining and energy self-sufficiency.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to commission a 35 MW solar plant at Zimplats, a project that underscores the mining giant’s commitment to innovative and eco-friendly practices.
Established at a cost of US$37 million, this initiative is just the first phase of a larger 185 MW solar project that aims to transform the energy landscape of the mining sector.
As the President tours the plant in Selous, near Chegutu, he is expected to highlight the project’s alignment with the Government’s vision of achieving a US$12 billion mining economy and elevating the nation to an upper middle-income status by 2030.
This solar plant is anticipated to enhance energy security, reduce reliance on the national grid, and significantly lower operational costs for Zimplats, all while benefiting the local community through job creation and environmental sustainability.

1 600 jobs created
More than 1 600 contract workers, mainly from the local community, were employed during the construction of the project that is being commissioned by President Mnangagwa today.
The project also provided skills development for workers already employed by Zimplats.
Implementation of today’s projects is also in fulfilment of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in November 2021 between Zimplats and the Government of Zimbabwe.
The MoU provides a framework for implementing a US$1.8 billion Expansion Programme between 2021 and 2031.
To date, US$1.2 billion has been channelled towards the programme.
President arrives for commissioning
President Mnangagwa has arrived at the Zimplats Selous Plant to commission the 35MW solar and smelting plant.
Vice Presidents Dr Constantino Chiwenga and Cde Kembo Mohadi are also in attendance.
The President is expected to tour the expanded smelting plant located at the heart of the Zimplats premises before heading to the solar plant, where he will be driven through a 109-hectare field.
The solar plant features solar panels mounted on a single-axis tracking system, along with state-of-the-art production control and security systems.
Top officials attend commissioning ceremony
Several Cabinet Ministers, Zanu PF Politburo members, legislators and captains of industry are among the dignitaries attending the commissioning ceremony of the solar plant.
These include Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando; Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere; Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi and Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Cde Marian Chombo, among others.
Upon arrival, President Mnangagwa headed for a closed-door briefing session where company officials are delivering an overview of the project, its objectives, benefits, and how it fits into the Government’s economic blueprint, the National Development Strategy 1.
Implementation of today’s project by Zimplats demonstrates the company’s resilience as it takes place at a time when the platinum mining industry is facing headwinds globally, particularly due to subdued commodity prices.
President commissions Zimplats projects
President Mnangagwa has unveiled a plaque at the Zimplats Selous Metallurgical Complex, which houses the company’s expanded smelting plant that is set for commissioning today.
The plant will see the implementation of environmentally advanced technology that includes abatement systems and digital plant controls. This will significantly improve emissions management and operational efficiency.
Zimplats’ decision to make a US$1,8 billion expansion programme is an indication of its confidence in the country’s mining sector, particularly its strategic focus on value addition, environmental stewardship and operational resilience.
The President latter unveiled another plaque at the 35MW solar plant. The plant boasts an array of solar panels to power the mine.
Project exudes mining sector’s projects
President Mnangagwa has now arrived at the main venue, marking the official commencement of today’s programmes.
Some of the guests include 11 traditional leaders drawn mainly from Mhondoro and surrounding areas, as well as mining organisations and local villagers.
Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Mr Charles Tahwa gave an overview of the project and said it embodies progress registered in the mining sector, particularly in the platinum sector.
He said today’s event is a culmination of an MOU signed between Zimplats and the Government of Zimbabwe.
“It’s a partnership rooted in our shared vision as a country. We are proud of this achievement, anchored on sustainable mining and equitable distribution of our resources,” said Mr Tahwa.
Zimplats delivers tangible results: Minister Chombo
In her welcome remarks, Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo commended Zimplats for delivering tangible results.
She noted that Zimplats continues to upgrade its plants as it seeks to move with modern technology and ensure increased output.
“These are landmark developments that speak volumes to our desire for clean energy,” said Minister Chombo.
He said efforts being made by Zimplats are consistent with the Government’s industrialisation agenda.
“All this demonstrates the success of the Second Republic,” she said.
Minister Chombo said Mashonaland West is uniquely positioned to grow the economy, adding that they were committed to doing so.
Zimplats’ boss highlights success stories
Zimplants chairperson, Advocate Tandi Orleyn outlined several projects that have been registered by the firm in recent years.
“What we are commissioning today is belief – belief in the future, belief in collaboration and sustained action. We are committed to being more than an investor but to becoming an ambassador of Zimbabwe,” said Advocate Tandi.
She said the firm has continued to invest in various areas, including corporate social responsibility.
Mining Minister commends Zimplats
Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando commended Zimplats for its continued investment in the mining sector despite a decline in metal prices globally.
Before winding up his delivery, Minister Chitando invited President Mnangagwa to deliver his keynote address.

President Mnangagwa has commended Zimplats for its continued expansion programme that has revolutionised the mining sector, particularly the platinum sub-sector.
“Platinum is a critical metal for the development of the country. It is pleasing that Zimplats is leading by example through adhering to responsible mining. Well done Zimplats,” said President Mnangagwa.
He implored Zimplats to draw its workforce from the local community, particularly when it comes to non-skilled and semi-skilled workers.
It is critical, said President Mnangagwa, to develop the nation for future generations.
“The generation that will come after us must be able to say those who came before us built the country for us. We should be proud of our country. Our children should not envy those working and living abroad. Rather, they should be satisfied working in the country,” said President Mnangagwa.
The President commended Zimplats for its clean energy efforts.
He ended his speech, thereby marking the end of the programme.
