President Mugabe yesterday officially commissioned a fleet of 97 Zimbabwe Republic Police vehicles at a ceremony held at Morris Depot.
The fleet is made up of 77 new trucks and 20 buses. The President commissioned the vehicles soon after the 2015 Presidential Graduation Parade of 698 officers in Harare where he was the reviewing officer.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Home Affairs Minister, Cde Kembo Mohadi, said the acquisition of a new fleet would help enhance ZRP’s capacity in entrenching peace and security in the country. Peace and security, Minister Mohadi said, were key economic enablers on which the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZIM-ASSET) was hinged.
He said ZRP’s commitment to the successful implementation of the economic blueprint was articulately reinforced by the organisation’s theme for 2015 which says: “ZRP, creating a conducive environment for economic growth and empowerment.” Minister Mohadi said some of the trucks were converted to armour and troop carriers, which would be allocated to the Support Unit troops for border patrols, anti-poaching operations and public order management events.
He said nine trucks were in the process of being converted to fuel tankers, honey suckers, breakdown recovery trucks and drill rigs. The minister said police provinces covering rural areas have been allocated 12 high ground level buses.
Police provinces covering urban areas will receive a total of six semi-luxury vehicles. He said the vehicles would go a long way in improving operational efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation.
Speaking at the same ceremony, the Commissioner-General of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Cde Augustine Chihuri, said President Mugabe’s visionary leadership had infused into the force and energised the impetus to do more for the country.
