Chinhoyi Bureau
PRESIDENT Mugabe is expected to plant a tree in the Chinhoyi Town House Park as part of commemorations of the National Tree Planting Day and the start of the 14th Zanu-PF National People’s Conference.
Delegates started arriving in Chinhoyi yesterday for the conference, with activities lined up for today including a clean-up of the central business district, a tree-planting event and a Central Committee meeting later in the day.
The clean-up of the town would include top party officials, the Environmental Management Agency and other stakeholders.
Accreditation of party delegates and service providers began yesterday morning and is expected to continue today as some delegates are still arriving.
The conference would run under the theme “Zim Asset Growing the Economy for Empowerment and Employment” and 6 000 delegates from all over the country are expected to attend.
Some delegates came in buses while others came in their cars to bring life into the usually quiet town of Chinhoyi which saw service providers, especially beer outlets, grocery shops and clothes retailers registering improved business.
Some restaurants and service providers have increased prices of goods to cash in on the high volumes of people that are expected to descend on the town.
One butchery increased the price of meat from around US$5 per kg to US$7 as a way of maximising profits.
Preparations for a gala on Saturday are underway.
One delegate from Mhondoro said the atmosphere in the town was welcoming and hoped for fruitful deliberations that would help transform the socio-economic environment so that it accords decent living to the majority.
“The United States dollar is scarce and you have the feeling that things are not going the way we want them to go. We hope this conference will come up with concrete steps to address the untenable economic environment,” said the delegate who preferred anonymity.
