PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has been commended for appointing more women to strategic positions in Government.

Since President Mnangagwa came into power in 2017, he has made sure that women have meaningful participation in national, local and community political leadership.

The President has given women a voice politically, and this has seen many women assuming political posts in various layers of governance.

The fact that President Mnangagwa has demonstrated his full commitment not only in words, but in backing those words with action, is enough to motivate any women eager for gender equality and gender equity to cast a vote for him.

Addressing the second national executive meeting of the Zanu PF Women’s League in Harare yesterday, Women’s League boss Cde Mabel Chinomona applauded President Mnangagwa for appointing more women into strategic positions.

Those appointed into positions of authority are Minister of Defence Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, President of the Senate Cde Chinomona, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Tsitsi Gezi, Attorney General Mrs Virginia Mabiza, Prosecutor General Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo, Public Health Advisor to the President and Cabinet Dr Agnes Mahomva and Secretary to Service Commissions Dr Tsitsi Choruma.

President Mnangagwa appointed six female ministers out of 26, with seven out of 26 appointed as deputy ministers, four out of 10 were appointed as Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, and two out of 10 Secretaries for Provincial Affairs and Devolution.

Five out of 25 were appointed as Permanent Secretaries.

Cde Chinomona also congratulated the league for mobilising more women to take part in the electoral process, saying more women participated than men.

“As we continue to identify and lobby for more avenues that support an increase in the participation of women, we sincerely thank the President for the extension of the quota allocation for women in the National Assembly which facilitated the setting aside of 60 percent more seats for females. The President went further to endorse a 30 percent quota for women at council level,” she said.

However, Cde Chinomona expressed her dissatisfaction with the performance of female party candidates who participated in the just ended harmonised elections with only 13 out of 23 open contest female party candidates winning the elections.

She said the sad development marked a sharp decline of numbers in comparison with 23 female candidates that sailed through in the previous elections.

Cde Chinomona said the league looks forward to more female appointments and commits to roll-out programmes that support, promote, groom and inspirer more women, working with an ambitious target of being the number one country in the percentage representation of women in strategic and leading decision-making positions and appointments in Southern Africa by 2030.

She said President Mnangagwa’s victory has presented yet another opportunity to intensify the attainment of Vision 2030 to be an upper-middle-income society.

“It is a well-deserved victory for our President and the party at large. Our campaign was made easy because of the high impact and citizen-centric life changing projects and programmes which were implemented by the Second Republic and its clear focus for the future of Zimbabwe and its beautiful people. That is why we continue to say victory is certain and well deserved,” said Cde Chinomona.

The Women’s League meeting was also meant to take stock of the performance of the party and highlight the works lined up for the rest of the year.
